What Is Steer Astro?
Steer Astro is a free Vedic astrology app in the ChatGPT app store. It connects ChatGPT to a real astronomical calculation engine (the Swiss Ephemeris, built on NASA JPL DE431 data) so you can have natural conversations about your birth chart, life timing, daily astrological conditions, and planetary transits — all based on real calculations, not AI-generated guesses.
Unlike asking plain ChatGPT about your horoscope (which produces hallucinated planetary positions), Steer Astro computes every chart from actual orbital mechanics. The AI then interprets the real data, giving you accurate, personalized insights in plain language.
It is completely free and unlimited. No subscriptions, no per-question fees, no ads, no paywalls. A free ChatGPT account is all you need.
Getting Started: Step by Step
Setting up takes about two minutes. Here's exactly what to do:
Open ChatGPT on your phone or browser and go to the Steer Astro app page. You'll see the app with its description and preview screenshots. Tap the Connect button.
ChatGPT will show you a permissions screen explaining what data Steer Astro can access. Review it and tap Continue to Steer Astro. You're in control — Steer only accesses data needed to respond to your astrology questions.
You'll be taken to Steer's secure sign-in page (sso.steer.coach). Sign in with Google (one tap) or create an account with your email. A free account is all you need — no paid subscription required.
After signing in, you'll see a new ChatGPT conversation with the Steer Astro badge in the chat input. This means the app is connected and ready to use.
When you ask your first astrology question, Steer will show a profile form. Fill in your details to calculate your chart:
- Name — so Steer can address you personally
- Gender
- Current location — for Panchang and transit calculations
- Birth date — the foundation of your birth chart
- Birth time — determines your Ascendant and house placements
- Birth location — needed for precise geographical calculations
Your profile is stored securely — create it once and get personalized insights anytime. You can always edit it later by asking "Help me edit my profile."
That's it! Ask anything in natural language — your chart is calculated instantly using Swiss Ephemeris. Steer responds with real data including your Panchang, birth chart, Dasha periods, and personalized insights. There's no limit on the number of questions.
Tip: Birth time accuracy matters. The Ascendant (Lagna) changes roughly every 2 hours. If your birth time is off by more than 30 minutes, the rising sign and house placements may be inaccurate. Check your birth certificate or ask family members for the most precise time you can get. Even an approximate time is better than no time at all.
What You Can Do with Steer Astro
Birth Chart (Kundli)
See the exact positions of all 9 Vedic planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu) at the moment of your birth. Your chart includes your Ascendant (rising sign), zodiac sign placements, and house positions for every planet. This is the foundation that everything else is built on.
Life Timing with Vimsottari Dasha
The Dasha system is Vedic astrology's method for timing life events. It divides your life into planetary periods (Mahadasha), sub-periods (Antardasha), and sub-sub-periods (Pratyantardasha). Steer calculates your complete Dasha timeline so you can see which planetary period you're currently in, when it started, when it ends, and what the upcoming shifts look like. This is one of Vedic astrology's most powerful predictive tools.
Daily Panchang
The Panchang is the Vedic almanac for each day. Steer provides the current Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (auspicious combination), Karana, and Rahu Kaal (inauspicious time window) for your current location. Use it to check whether a given day is favorable for important activities.
Planetary Transits
See how the current positions of planets interact with your birth chart. Steer analyzes ongoing transits personalized to your chart, showing which houses are being activated and what that means for different areas of your life. Major transits of Saturn (Sade Sati), Jupiter, and Rahu/Ketu are especially significant.
Sample Questions to Ask
You can ask Steer anything about your astrology in natural language. Here are some examples to get you started:
You can also ask more specific questions like:
- "What does my current Dasha period mean for my career?"
- "Is this week's Panchang favorable for signing a contract?"
- "What does Saturn transiting my 7th house mean?"
- "Tell me about my Jupiter placement and how it affects finances"
- "When does my current Mahadasha end and what comes next?"
- "What's the best time this month to start something new?"
Tips for Getting the Best Results
Be specific with your questions
Instead of "Tell me about my chart," try "What does my Moon in the 4th house mean for my emotional life?" or "How does the upcoming Jupiter transit affect my career?" Specific questions get specific, useful answers.
Ask follow-up questions
Steer Astro works like a conversation, not a one-shot report. If something in the reading is interesting or unclear, ask for more detail. "Can you explain that Rahu placement more?" or "What practical steps can I take during this Saturn period?" are great follow-ups.
Combine chart analysis with timing
The most powerful insights come from combining your birth chart analysis with current timing. For example: "Given my chart and current Dasha period, is this a good year to relocate?" This gives Steer multiple data points to synthesize into a more nuanced answer.
Update your location if you move
The Panchang (daily almanac) and Rahu Kaal calculations depend on your current geographic location. If you've moved or are traveling, ask Steer to update your location for accurate daily readings.
Edit your profile anytime
If you need to correct your birth details or update your current location, simply say "Help me edit my profile" and Steer will guide you through the changes.
Why Steer Uses Real Calculations
When you ask plain ChatGPT for your birth chart, it generates plausible-looking but incorrect planetary positions from its training data. The planets might be in the wrong signs, the Dasha periods might be years off, and every prediction built on that data would be unreliable.
Steer Astro avoids this by using the Swiss Ephemeris — the same astronomical calculation engine used by professional astrologers worldwide. Built on NASA JPL DE431 data, it computes planetary positions with sub-arcsecond precision. The AI layer interprets the real data rather than generating fake data.

Privacy and Security
Your birth details are stored securely and used only for calculating your astrological charts. Steer does not sell your data, does not show ads, and does not use third-party ad trackers. Your profile information is encrypted in transit and at rest. You can read our full privacy policy for details.
